Curt B. Greene

Curt B. Greene, 51, onetime Du Quoin State Fair vice-president under the late W.R. Hayes II, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Saturday in Lexington, Ky. He was a standardbred horseman and consultant and owner of Greene Speed Limited.
Born in Forsyth, Ill., he was the son of John B. Greene of Forsyth and the late Margaret Cooper Greene.
He was a 1971 graduate of Southern Illinois University where he studied journalism.
As an author, he wrote two books, "The Kentucky Futurity, 100 Years with the American Trotter" and "The New Car and Training of the Trotter and Pacer." He was also contributing editor and author to a number of standardbred racing publications including TROT and Hoosier Horse Review.
He first worked as a reporter for the Decatur Herald & Review, later as an associate editor of the Horseman and Fair World Magazine in Lexington and had served as executive director of the Illinois Harness Horsemen's Association in Chicago.
He had served as vice president for marketing and public relations for the Du Quoin State Fair were he was in charge of marketing and public relations for harness racing's premier event, the Hambletonian. He also authored the creation of the World Trotting Derby here at Du Quoin after the Hambletonian was moved to the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ.
He moved to Lexington in 1982 to serve as general manager of the Red Mile and Tattersalls Sales Company until 1991. As a consultant he worked in the U.S. and Canada with a client base that extended to Europe.
In addition to his father, he survived by Sallie G. Slone, a son, Darin Patrick Greene, two daughters, Natalie Ellen Greene and Valerie Erin Greene, all of Lexington, a brother, Corwyn Greene, Pittsburgh, PA and a niece and nephew, Ashley and Ryan Greene.
Services were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway, Lexington with interment in Lexington Cemetery.
Friends were able to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
